Luce on board the ship HERO of Nantucket, Massachusetts. Joseph McCleave, master, for the homeward passage from the Pacific Ocean whaling grounds. Made 2 ports-of-call and spoke 7 vessels; Journal kept by Edward C. Luce on board the bark Louisa Sears of Edgartown, Massachusetts. Edward Mayhew, master, for a voyage to the Atlantic Ocean whaling grounds. Contains whale stamps, describes shipboard life, mentions scrimshaw and two slavers, Splendid of Boston and Eliza Jane of New York. Made 7 ports-of-call and spoke 26 vessels. Captain Mayhew died April 26, 1857.
